Geography

Being earlier divided into two states, the National Democratic Republic Yemen and the Yemen Arab Republic, the Republic Yemen is located in southwest part of Arabian Peninsula on the coast of the Red Sea opposite to Ethiopia and stretches along the southern part of Arabian Peninsula in the gulf Aden and the Indian Ocean. It borders on Saudi Arabia in the North and on Oman in the east. The country by the size is approximately equal to France. The narrow coastal plain in the south, 700-miles long (1130 km), passes to mountain regions, and then into low area.

History

The history of Yemen goes back to Mineysky (1200-650 BC) and to Sabeysky (750-115 BC) to a kingdom. Ancient Yemen (round the port of Aden) participated in profitable trade of Myrrha and an incense. He was captured by Romans (the 1st century AD), and also Ethiopians and Persians (the 6th century AD). In 628 AD the country accepted Islam and in the 10th century passed into the power of the Dynasty Rassitov from Shiite sect of zeydut which continued to take part in policy of Northern Yemen up to 1962. The Ottoman Empire officially occupied the territory since 1538 to split of the empire in 1918.

Northern part of Yemen imams until in 1962 I occurred about - the Egyptian military coup governed. The junta founded the Yemen Arab Republic, and after civil war in which Nasser from Egypt and the USSR supported revolutionaries, and the king Saod from Saudi Arabia and the king of Jordan Hussein supported monarchists, royalists were finally crushed in the middle of 1969.

The southern port of Aden which is strategically located at the beginning of the Red Sea was colonized by Great Britain in 1839, and by 1937 with expansion of its territory it became known as Adensky protectorate. In 1960 the Nationalist Front of Release (NFR) fought against the British dominion that on November 30, 1967 led to creation of the National Republic of the Southern Yemen. In 1979 under strong Soviet influence the country became the only Marxist state in the Arab world.

The Republic of Yemen was created on May 22, 1990 when westernized Yemen and the Marxist Yemen Arab Republic united after 300 years of "separation" and created the new state. Poverty and decline of the Soviet economic support in the south of steel important incentive for merge. The new president, Ali Abdalla Saleh, was elected by parliaments of both countries.
