Geography

Tanzania is located in East Africa on the coast of the Indian Ocean. It borders on Uganda and Kenya, in the West on Burundi, Rwanda and Congo in the north, and in the south on Mozambique, Zambia and Malawi. It is three times more by the size, than the State of New Mexico. Tanzania includes three most known lakes in Africa - the Victoria in the north, Tanganyika in the West and Nyasa in the south. Mount Kilimanjaro located in the north, 19340 foots (5895 m) in height is the highest point on the continent. The island of Zanzibar is separated from the continent by the 22 kilometer channel.

History

The Arab dealers the first started colonizing area in 700. In 1500 the Portuguese researchers reached coastal areas and till the 17th century kept the territory under the control until the sultan of Oman seized power. Together with the present countries of Burundi and Rwanda in 1885 Tanganyika became a colony of the German East Africa. After World War I it Great Britain under the mandate of League of the Nations operated, and then she became a ward the UN territory.

Though it is also not mentioned in old stories till the 12th century, was always considered that Zanzibar was connected with the southern Arabia. In 1503 Portuguese made it one of the states rendering them tribute and later based a trade post there, but in 1698 they were expelled from Oman by Arabs. Zanzibar was proclaimed independent of Oman in 1861, and in 1890 it became the British protectorate.
