History

Taiwan was populated with natives of a Malayan origin when in the 7th century in its territory there were Chinese from areas now known as Fujian and Guangdong, having made the most part of the population. Portuguese investigated area in 1590, having called it "The beautiful island" (Formosa). In 1624 Dutches created fortresses in the south, and Spaniards in the north. Dutches compelled Spaniards to leave the island in 1641 and governed there till 1661 until the Chinese general Zheng Chenggong intruded on the territory and created the independent kingdom. Manchurians seized the island in 1683 and dominated over it till 1895 then it passed into the power of Japan after the first Chinese-Japanese war. Japan improved Formosa and used it in the purposes. Taiwan was the purpose of heavy American bombings during World War II, and at the end of war the island was returned to China.

In December, 1949 after defeat of its troops on the continent the nationalist government of the generalissimo Chan Kai-shi retired to Taiwan. Chan, the leader of Kuomintang, ruled the island though only 15% of the population were made by immigrants of 1949. It contained 600000-thousand army in hope over time to restore the continent. Beijing considered the Taiwan government with suspicion and anger, calling Taiwan the broken-away province of China.

The place in the UN representing all China was occupied by nationalists for more than two decades before they lose it in October, 1971 when People's Republic of China was founded, and Taiwan was compelled to give the place to Beijing.
