Geography

Oman is 1700-kilometer (1.000 miles) the coastal plain in southeast part of Arabian Peninsula located on the bank of the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman. It borders on the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. The country is equal by the size with the State of Kansas.

History

Arabs moved to Oman, since 9 го centuries BC, and in the 7th century AD there was an address to Islam. Muscat, the capital of geographical area known as Oman, from 1508 to 1648 were occupied by Portuguese. Then it got under board of Ottoman Turks, but in 1741 Ahmad ibn Said forced out them, and Sultan Ahmad's descendants rule Oman and till today.

Ahmad broadened the empire in East Africa, and some time Zanzibar was the Omani capital. After 1861, however, Zanzibar got rid of Omani management.

Sultans and imams of Oman continuously clashed during the whole 20th century till 1959 when the last imam Ibadi was moved from the country. During palace revolution on July 23, 1970 the sultan, Said bin Teymur governing since 1932 was overthrown by the son, Qaboos ibn Said who promised to create the modern government and to use again found richness of oil for the aid to people of this very isolated state. In 1971 Oman joined League of Arab States and the United Nations.

Long border disputes were resolved with Yemen in October, 1992, and in 1997 the countries agreed about the new cards defining borders.

In 1997 the sultan Qaboos granted to women the right to be elected in advisory body of the country, Shura's Council (Al-Schur's Majlis). In 2003 the sultan allowed a vote to all, reached 21-year age. Earlier voters were selected from among elite, and only about a quarter of the population it was authorized to vote.
