Geography

Nauru is the island in the Pacific Ocean to the south of the equator, about 2,500 miles (4,023 km) to the southwest from Honolulu. Mining industry of phosphate actually destroyed tiny national ecology, turning its tropical vegetation into a fruitless, rocky heathland.

History

In 1798 the British researcher became the first European who visited the island. Germany seized the island in 1888, and at the turn of the century began to extract phosphate. Japanese occupied the island during World War II and compelled 1,200 nauruanets - about two thirds of the population - to move down. In 1947 the island got under guardianship of the UN and was given on management of Australia. To 1967 mining industry of phosphate at last again I returned under control of islanders, and on January 31, 1968, Nauru became one of the most small independent republics in the world. For nektory time thanking phosphate production the income per capita of the tiny country became the highest in the world after Saudi Arabia.

In 2006 reserves of phosphate were settled and the island turned into a wastebasket. Nauru addressed to the International Court of Justice that the foreign companies compensated almost centenary production of phosphate. In 1993 Australia proposed Nauru a peace solution - 2.5 million Australian dollars will be annually paid for 20 years. New Zealand and Great Britain also agreed to pay at a time on 12 million dollars. Unfortunately, pravitelno couldn't dispose expediently of money and at the end of the 1990th national economy completely failed.

In 2000 the countries of G7 put the strong pressure upon the country because of its banking system which is used by the Russian criminals for money laundering.

In September, 2001 Nauru sheltered three full boats of the Asian refugees intended for Australia. As compensation Australia paid the island 20 million dollars and other financial support. Camp who sheltered more than 400 refugees were extremely cold and always needed the medical equipment.

After death of Bernard Doviyy elected in 2003 the president for the seventh time, the senior member of council of the cabinet Ludwig Scotty took his place. In August Scotty was dismissed after a vote of no confidence, and Rene Harris was elected. However thanks to communications by June, 2004 Scotty again returned presidency. Scotty suffered other vote of no confidence in Parliament in December, 2007 and was replaced by Marx Stephen who was the member of parliament and the Minister of Finance and educations.

In November, 2010 the former president Ludwig Scotty accepted appointment as the speaker in the government, exactly thanks to it presidential elections were won by Markus Stephen.

The president Markus Stephen accused of corruption retired in November, 2011. Frederik Pitcher was elected the president, but was expelled because of a vote of no confidence soon. On November 15, 2011 Sprent of Dabwido became the president.
