Archaeological and historical traces disappeared about the first millennium BC. At the beginning of the 18th century the tribe of the Central Arabia Anizakh based Kuwait City which in 1756 became the autonomous country which is under the power of the sheikh. Abd Rahim from a family al-Sabah became the first sheikh, and his descendants till today continue to rule Kuwait. At the end of 18 and the beginning of 19 centuries the country belonged to the periphery of the Ottoman Empire. In 1897 Kuwait received the British protection when the sheikh began to be afraid that Turks will expand the power over this area. In 1961 Britain finished the protectorate, having given to Kuwait independence, but agreed to provide military aid as required. Iraq immediately threatened with occupying of the region, and British sent the troops there to protect Kuwait. Soon after that the League of Arab States provided the troops, having replaced with them British. Claims of Iraq were stopped when on July 20, 1961 the League of Arab States recognized independence of Kuwait. Historically it developed so that Kuwait followed neutral and intermediary policy among the Arab states.
