Geography

Located on the Pacific coast of Central America, El Salvador borders on Guatemala in the West and Honduras in the North and the East. El Salvador the smallest of the Central American countries equal on the square Massachusetts. The most part of the country is on a fertile volcanic plateau about 2,000 foots high (607 m).

History

Indians of Pipil, descendants of Aztecs, migrated in area in the 11th century. In 1525 Pedro de Alvarado, the lieutenant of Cortés, won El Salvador.

El Salvador, as well as other countries of Central America, declared the independence of Spain on September 15, 1821 and became part of federation of the Central American states until the union broke up in 1838. Within many decades, El Salvador endured numerous revolutions and wars against other Central American republics. With 1931 to 1979 El Salvador military dictatorship operated.

In 1969 El Salvador intruded in Honduras after Honduran land owners banished some thousands of Salvadorans. Four-day war became known as "football war" because it flashed during game on soccer between these two countries.
