History

Tribes in the Northern Highlands of Ecuador created the Kingdom of Quito approximately 1000 BC. However they were won by the Empire of monks. In 1532 the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pissarro won the earth, and within the 17th century the Spanish colony prospered. In 1809 there was the first revolt against Spain. In 1819 Ecuador joined Venezuela, Colombia and Panama in the confederation known as Big Colombia.

When in 1830 Big Colombia collapsed, Ecuador became independent. Because of numerous revolts 48 presidents were replaced. In spite of the fact that in 1970 military came to the power, the country didn't test violence and any repressions from other Latin American regime. 30 years of democracy were absolutely inefficient because of weak executive power of the Congress.

Peru intruded in Ecuador in 1941 and took the most part of the territory of Ecuador. In 1981 and in 1995 wars again broke out. In May, 1999 Ecuador and Peru signed the agreement which put an end to almost 60 years military dispute.
