Timor was colonized by Portuguese in 1520. Dutches in 1613 took the western part of the island under the control. Portugal and the Netherlands fought for islands until in 1860 signed the agreement thanks to which, divided Timor, providing to Portugal east half of the island (it was the first Portuguese settlement on the island). Australia and Japan fought with each other for these islands during World War II; nearly 50,000 people died during Japanese war.
In 1949 the Netherlands left the colony in the Dutch East Indies, including the Western Timor, so there was a country of Indonesia. East Timor remained under the Portuguese control to 1975 until Portuguese left Timor after the 455th summer colonization, having made the island defenseless. On July 16, 1976, nine days later after the democratic republic of East Timor was declared by the independent country, Indonesia took Timor. Though no country except Australia officially recognized annexation, invasion of Indonesia was authorized by the United States and other countries of the West.
