Dominican Republic was discovered by Columbus during his first travel in 1492. He called her Espanyola, and his son, Diego, was her first viceroy. The capital of Santo Domingo founded in 1496 is the oldest European settlement in the Western hemisphere.
Spain conceded a colony of France in 1795, and inhabitants of Haiti under the leadership of Francois Dominique Toussaint-Louvertur won it in 1801. In 1808 the people rose and took Santo Domingo next year, having created the first republic. Spain restored the property right to a colony in 1814. In 1821 the Spanish domination was overthrown, and in 1822 the colony was won by gaitiyets. In 1844 gaitiyets were expelled, and Dominican Republic led by Pedru Santana was created. Revolts and attacks of gaitiyets led to that Santana made the country the province of Spain from 1861 to 1865.
The president Buenaventura of Baes, having faced economy in ruins, I tried to attach the country to the USA in 1870, however the Senate of the USA refused to ratify the contract on accession. The disorder proceeded before Oulisses Ayrault's dictatorship. In 1916 when the chaos flashed again, the USA sent to the country of marines who remained there till 1924.
The sergeant of Dominican sea pekhotinsky army, Rafael Leónidas Trujillo Molina, overthrew Horacio Vasquez in 1930 and established dictatorship which lasted 31 years up to its murder in 1961. In 1962 Juan Bosch from the left-wing Dominican revolutionary party in four decades became the first democratically elected president.
