That now is called as Bangladesh, is part of the historical region Bengal, northeast part of the Indian subcontinent. Bangladesh consists generally of East Bengal (West Bengal is part of India, and its people, first of all, are Hindus), and also Silkhet's district of the Indian state of Assam.
The kingdom named by Vanga or Banga (about 1000 BC) was the earliest mention of the region. Throughout centuries Buddhists governed there, but in the 10th century Bengal, Hindus generally borrowed. In 1576 Bengal became part of the empire of Great Moguls, and most of east Bengalese accepted Islam. Since 1757 Bengal rules the British India, while Great Britain didn't retire in 1947, and from two mainly Muslim areas of the Indian subcontinent Pakistan was founded. For nearly 25 years after finding of independence of Great Britain its history was closely connected with Pakistan.
The western Pakistan and East Pakistan were united by religion (Islam), but their people differed in culture, external data and 1000 km of the Indian territory were divided.
