Known in the ancient time as Dilmun, in the 3rd millennium B.C. Bahrain was the important center of trade. Were in the 4th eyelid of our era of the island under the power of Persians, and then under the Arab power till 1541 when Portuguese intruded on the territory. Persia took control of Bahrain in 1602 again. In 1783 Ahmad ibn Al Khalifa came to the power, and the family Al Khalifa continues to rule the country today. Bahrain became the British protectorate in 1820. It gained full independence only on August 14, 1971.
Though in 1930 in Bahrain oil was found, it was rather insignificant in comparison with other Gulf States, and also from all region of its well dried the first. The sheikh Iza ibn Sulman Al Khalifa who became an emir in 1961, was resolutely adjusted on modifying of economy of its country and started transformation of Bahrain to large financial center. The country provides to the people free medical care, education and old-age pensions.
The conflicts between Shiite and Sunni Muslims are infinite problems in Bahrain. The Sunni minority to which the ruling family Al Khalifa belongs, controls almost all power and richness of the country. Shiites continue to agitate for bigger representation in the government, and insignificant cruel collisions led to death about two tens people, since 1994.
